YES!
The last few years I have been reporting on the various sex scandals, digusting imagery and horrible behaviour of American Apparel. In particular, Dov Charney, the CEO of the company.
I have also refused to shop there on those grounds since 2009.
So it was interesting to read this week, that he has been fired. It's been released that he has been fired for gross misconduct but little is known about exactly what it was that tipped the company over the edge. The company have so far stood by him on all accounts of sexual harassment and also, the incident where he racially insulted a staff member.
Charney will leave the company he created in 1991, in 30 days. Although don't expect him to go gentle into that good night....apparently he was completely shocked by the decision and is planning on fighting it. So this could get ugly.
AA have meanwhile appointed two new CEOs and presidents of the company and it will be interesting to see the direction that they will go in over the next year. If they manage to get rid of the sexual content in advertising, the porn related slogans and actually treat their female (and male) employees with respect and decency, then who knows, I may start shopping there again. Just to say how bad the sexual harassment issue alone was, NINE women accused him of harassment. NINE. All of which were later settled.
There are also issues of financial losses. It was well known that the company was suffering in 2011 when they reported insane losses while at the same time opening their first Irish store just off Grafton street - oh and don't forget the letter sent by a staff member to the papers concerning the hiring process of the store. It's nuts. But, we were all led to believe this had changed pace with the securing of investors, apparently not and the company have once again posted record losses for the past financial year.
