These Levears Earring Lifts Changed My Life — Best Earring Backs - Cosmopolitan.com Posted: 06 Nov 2018 12:00 AM PST I love jewelry, especially the dangly kind (must be the Gemini in me), which is why it's so soul-crushing that I normally have to stick to small studs. As much as I love heavy statement earrings, they're a pain in the ear and, frankly, aren't worth it. But recently, someone put me onto Levears Earring Lifts, and now I have to share them with y'all because they're great. Here's why: Better than a basic back, these are actually lifts.Made with a "patented stabilizer technology," each back features a little hook or "curl" on top for optimal support. To wear them, fasten one to the post as you normally would, then rotate until it feels most comfortable for your ear. Take note, though: These work best on earrings with posts, not those with screws or hooks. The Levears are much bigger than a standard earring back.I'm estimating here, but the Levears look at least three times the size of a normal earring back. This makes so much sense—why would you use the same thing for a giant dangler as you would a small stud? Genius. They eliminate the need for commuter earrings.Have you ever taken off your earrings as soon as you got to your destination because that was all your lobes could handle? Then you've probably also tried waiting until you've arrived to put them on. I'm guilty of both—but not anymore. These make it tolerable to wear heavy accessories for hours. I may still change my shoes when I get to work but I don't have to switch my earrings, and for that I'm grateful. They make it manageable to wear heavy jewelry all day.Earrings, IMO, are the headbands of jewelry in terms of the amount of time you have before you get a headache and need to take them off. I performed my own little experiment and compared what it felt like to wear my favorite lucite hoops with and without the Levears from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on two separate work days. I took off my earrings four times throughout the day when I wore the normal back but didn't remove them once with the Levears. Did they still feel heavy? Yes, because they are. But the backs helped distribute the weight so that not just my piercing was feeling the pressure of the weight. They come in sets of four pairs, so you have extras in case you lose any.The stainless steel backs are a bargain at $25, coming out to $6.25 a pair. If you have sensitive skin, you can also shop sterling silver, gold plated, 14k white gold, or 14k yellow gold options. All that to say, if you too need a little extra support, try these babies. You won't believe your ears. |
Sensitive skin? How to find hypoallergenic earrings and more - Today.com Posted: 01 Sep 2016 12:00 AM PDT Anyone who's made it through an evening wearing hefty, dangling earrings knows the feeling: raw, sore lobes the next morning. In a worst-case scenario — as TODAY's Tamron Hall recently experienced — the earlobes actually rip. (Yikes!) So what's a jewelry lover to do? Aside from ditching the earrings halfway through dinner, there are a few other methods. Aug. 22, 201602:05 Do you have sensitive skin?Stick to non-reactive metals such as gold and silver when choosing earrings, Kristin Petrovich, owner of the mineral- and gemstone-based Sjal Skincare, told TODAY Style. When it comes to gold, the higher the karat the better. "For example, 24-karat gold is hypoallergenic and doesn't cause irritation to the body," she said. Skip rose gold, which contains copper and can irritate some people. If gold isn't your style, look for sterling silver instead of nickel. But if you do experience a bad skin reaction from a lesser metal, Petrovich suggests rubbing the area around the piercing with sea salt water or an antibiotic cream. Speaking of sensitive skin, here's another option some people swear by: apply liquid bandages to both sides of the ear before putting your earrings in, to minimize redness and irritation. Are your earrings too heavy? If sensitivity isn't your problem but your ears are feeling dragged down by heavy earrings, consider earring patches (like Kendra Scott's Lobe Wonder, $10). They're stickers that attach to the back of the ear to stabilize the earring, so your skin doesn't stretch as much. RELATED: Here's why you'll never look at earrings the same way again Do you have stretched or torn earlobes?Believe it or not, torn earlobes aren't that uncommon, Dr. Daniel Maman of 740 Park Plastic Surgery in New York City told TODAY Style. "My partner and I probably fix 10 earlobes a month," he said. "It happens for a couple reasons — when people wear earrings that are too heavy, they slowly cause stretching in the earlobe and that little piece on the bottom gets thinner and thinner and at some point it tears through. Usually, it's gradual and occurs over years." RELATED: The new necklace: 39 ways to wear the hottest jewelry style now The second culprit? Sleeping in earrings, which is dangerous because they can drag across the pillow and snag, eventually tearing the ear. While a fix isn't all that difficult — "We do it with local anesthesia and it takes about 20 minutes," plus healing, Dr. Maman said — it's not ideal. So save the heavy earrings for special occasions and always remember to take them out before bed. |
